Do This to Make Your Life Interesting!
Since the start of this year, I have been making a conscious effort to reach out to people I haven’t seen or spoken to in years, especially people I went to school with. Over the past few months, it’s been a lot of fun meeting and catching up with them and seeing how they’ve changed and evolved as people. Some of them are nothing like how they used to be in school. I feel that almost everyone I have met is a better version of the person they used to be in school. People have become so much more open-minded, accepting and friendlier, and I found it easy to connect and get along with many of them. I mentioned this to my mother the other day, and she made an interesting point. She said I probably found it easier to get along with many of them now because I've also changed and become friendlier and open-minded. I’d have to agree with her because perhaps I was more judgmental back in school, and this might have been a hindrance when it came to connecting with others. I was a little nervous about reaching out to people wondering if they would really want to meet up? (With one of them, it had been almost a decade since I last saw or spoke to them.) Would they find it awkward If I suddenly reached out to them, out of the blue for no apparent reason? Though the process of reaching out to people has been uncomfortable, I must say that actually meeting people certainly hasn’t been uncomfortable or awkward despite my fears. As someone who had the habit of wanting to escape feeling any discomfort, especially when it came to interacting with people, I feel one of the key lessons that solo travelling has taught me has been: Wonderful things can happen when you ignore the fears in your mind and put yourself out there. I’d encourage you to do the same and reach out to people you haven’t been in touch with for a long time. Your mind may try to talk you out of it by giving you a list of reasons why you shouldn’t do it. But don’t let that stop you because our minds are fearful by nature and can be very deceiving. I’ve found reconnecting with people after a long gap to be fun, inspiring and interesting, to say the least, and I believe that perhaps you will find that will be your experience as well.
