The Gift of Doing Uncomfortable Things

Updated: Aug 16

Couple of months ago, I performed at an open-mic in Kochi for the first time.

It was set in a place I had never been before and I also didn’t know anyone there. I had no idea what to expect.

Well, it turned out to be so much better than I could have imagined and it was a very rewarding experience to say the least.

The crowd was great, and sang along with me while I performed songs like Knocking on Heaven’s Door and Norwegian wood.

I ended up making some friends there and later over the course of the week had a good time jamming with a couple of them. In fact, one of my main intentions for going to the open-mic performance was to find people to jam with.

In my life, one thing I’ve realised is the willingness to do things despite not knowing what the outcome will be like can often lead to some amazing experiences.

However, to do that, having a good tolerance for discomfort is important.

Whether we consciously realise it or not, our mind loves to cling to what’s familiar and certain. We go an extraordinary extent to avoid feeling even slightest amount of discomfort.

We want some kind of guarantee that things will be alright before we embark to do

something. But life doesn’t quite work that way, does it?

Probably the biggest gift I have received from solo travelling is the willingness to be open to taking chances and be less fearful of the unknown.

Putting yourself in uncomfortable situations has its merit though it may not seem like of any value when you are going through it.

You can never predict just how much impact a single decision can have.

Since performing in the Open Mic in March, I have performed 2 more times in the same place, written five new original songs (played some of them live) made a lot of new friends and I’ve had a great time.

All of this wouldn’t have happened if I wasn’t willing to take the first step.

So, when was the last time you willingly stepped out of your comfort zone to do something that scared you?

Like it was the case with me, you may find that things may turn out to be much better than you can imagine.

Here's a short Clip of my performance at the Open-Mic
