The Joy of Music Festivals!

I vividly recall a conversation I had with a couple of foreigners in a backpacker hostel in Mcloedganj (Himachal Pradesh), eight years ago. They were excitedly talking about some of the music festivals they had attended, and they asked me about the music festival scene in India.
The truth was, I had no clue. I had never been to one.
Fast forward to today; I’ve attended five music festivals in the last nine months and I’ve completely fallen in love with them.
The positive vibes, the freedom to be silly and dress outrageously, the wonderful people you meet, the conversations you have, the sense of community, the thrill of discovering new artists… I could go on and on about what I love about music festivals.
Festivals are one of those rare places where almost nobody is judging you, which gives you the freedom to be playful and childlike again.
Dancing intensely to the music alongside friends and strangers can be such a therapeutic experience. Once you get locked into the beat, you feel so present and alive that you forget about everything else.
Some of the live performances I’ve witnessed at these festivals have been magical and it still gives me goosebumps when I think about them.
In 2024, I took a leap of faith and travelled solo to Bloom in Green, a three-day music and camping festival set in the middle of a huge farm in Tamil Nadu.
Bloom was more than just a music festival and it had a diverse line-up of wellness, spiritual and personal growth focused workshops.
As someone deeply drawn to music, personal growth and meeting new people, Bloom hit the sweet spot by bringing all of these together in one space.
One of my favourite moments of that year was the ecstatic dance session at Bloom which involved almost 90 minutes of non-stop dancing. It was such an exhilarating experience and a natural high!
I arrived at Bloom not knowing anyone and left with a big group of friends I’m still in touch with today. Since then, we have attended multiple festivals together.
While I was at Bloom in Green, I had an epiphany. Instead of my tradition of taking solo trips to new places every year, why not solo travel to different music festivals? Following through on this idea has turned out to be a fantastic decision.
Going to music festivals has made me a better person as well. It’s helped me loosen up a lot, become more empathetic, confident and it has left me with a deep feeling of gratitude to be alive.
The only downside if I’m honest is that attending music festivals can become quite an addiction. You are always looking for a new one to attend.
For me, attending music festivals is one of the most amazing experiences of being alive. If you have never been to one, I’d highly recommend giving it a chance.
